You will need: 

 

For the dough

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • Powdered sugar, for rolling out dough

For the icing

  • Icing sugar
  • Water 
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Food colouring of your choice

method:

  • Mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt
  • In a different bowl, mix together butter and sugar until light and creamy (use an electric whisk for this, save yourself)
  • Gradually add the flour mix, and whisk until you form a dough
  • Remove from the bowl, split the dough in half, and refrigerate for 2 hours

 

  • Heat the oven to 190 C

 

  • Sprinkle icing sugar onto the work surface
  • Roll out one section of the dough at a time, so that the dough is about 1/4 inch thick
  • Cut into pieces
  • Place on a greased baking tray
  • Bake for 7-9 minutes until golden
  • Leave to cool 

 

  • whilst cooling, prepare the icing sugar
  • mix together the icing sugar,  water in the ratio 4:1- feel free to add more icing sugar/water if your mix is too thick/runny
  • add the vanilla extract
  • mix, and set some aside
  • spread onto cookies
  • in the icing set aside, add a few drops of food colouring 
  • driddle the black icing onto to cookies in circles
  • using a toothpick, draw lines from the centre of the cookie outwars to connect the circles and create a spiderweb pattern
