Be prepared to work hard

Essential to any successful internship is having the right mindset. Even if you don’t particularly enjoy the work you are doing, if you want to impress your colleagues, then you need to be willing to work hard during your internship. Having this commitment to an internship is a good way to make a good impression and shows that you are taking the opportunity you have been given seriously.

Always have a positive attitude

No matter how you are feeling, try to ensure that you always adopt a positive outlook throughout your internship. Being willing to do any job given to you, no matter how mundane, while continuing to maintain a positive attitude and showing that you are happy to be there, is essential if you want to impress. Not only will this help you to feel happier and more at ease in your new environment, having this attitude will go a long way in making the people around you happier, a good skill to bring to any workplace.

Do your research

Do your research

If you want to impress your new boss and colleagues, then be sure to read up on the company you are interning at. It’s a good idea to try to learn a little about the industry you will be working in by talking to friends or family members who might be able to help, or researching this on the internet. Try to ensure that before you begin, you have some idea of the company history, core values and key members of the team. If the company is client based, then it can also be a good idea to research some of these clients beforehand too. Not only will already having this knowledge look impressive, it’s a good way to ensure that you feel confident and relaxed about your forthcoming internship.

Don’t be afraid to speak up

Don't be afraid to speak-up

While it may might seem daunting, never be afraid to ask questions. Whether it’s asking for clarification on a task, or asking for help, these questions will help you to do the best job you can and will help to show that you are willing and keen to learn. It’s also important to ask for feedback and help where needed. Not only does this demonstrate that you care about your work, it ensures that you have an accurate idea of what you need to improve upon and what you are doing well.

Be confident

Be confident

While it may feel difficult at times, try to be confident during your internship. A good way to encourage this feeling in yourself is to ensure you feel comfortable in the clothes you are wearing. If you feel and look good, then you are bound to feel more confident in yourself, and as a result, you will likely appear more confident to others. Try to take the time to plan and prepare for situations so that you are not caught off guard and try to ensure that you arrive with plenty of time in the morning so that you never turn up to work already feeling stressed.
