Meet Andy Field, stand up comedian

Andy Field - A Young Comedian Making Waves!

Andy Field has made quite an impact on the comedy scene in just a few years with his unique, quirky style and fresh approach to traditional stand up.

He’s won loads of awards, has had his special filmed for comedy streaming service, NextUp, and has his own 6-part BBC Radio 1 podcast, which is available on iTunes too – The Andy Field Experience.

Andy is also a regular performer at festivals such as Latitude, Bestival, Leefest and Secret Garden Party, and is fast becoming a familiar face at top comedy clubs around the country.

At just 26, that’s quite a career - how did he get so far, so fast?

"The Andy Field Experience is what happens when a young man spends his entire academic and personal life thinking about jokes."

Andy’s journey through comedy started on a more academic route than most, graduating in the summer of 2013 with a 2:1 BA (Hons) in Comedy Writing and Performance from Southampton Solent, followed by a Master’s in Creative Writing from Brunel.

Andy said:“When I went to Southampton Solent it was 113th in the league tables (out of 115) and my course was arguably the most experimental one going…. I think most people viewed my degree as a total waste of money!” However, he credits much of the work in his show on NextUp to those heady student days, adding: “The Andy Field Experience is what happens when a young man spends his entire academic and personal life thinking about jokes.”

Hitting the open mic comedy circuit hard, and working as a teaching assistant to pay the bills, Andy’s rise through the comedy ranks has been exceptionally speedy.

Within a year of graduating from Southampton he beat 300 comedians in 34 heats to reach the finals of the 2014 Leicester Square New Act of the Year. Buoyed by his growing popularity, Andy went on to be crowned Winner of the Chortle Student Comedy Award the following year, with a set that included an unforgettable rendition of the self-penned poem, ‘Things That My Mum Says’

As well as his Radio 1 Podcast, Andy has also hosted his own web series In The Tub, in which he interviews up-and-coming bands in the bath (of course)!
